MARIE ANTOINETTE SPENT ALL THE MONEY
We were warned the Palace of Versailles was a busy place, maybe a little bit too hectic for a family with two small children. Sugar wanted to know everything about this famous Queen who had (apparently) started a revolution. My fascination wasn’t far behind hers. I had always wanted to see the magnificence of Versailles and know more about this women who had invented her own life.
A day both crazy and amazing followed. Inside the Palace crowds were intense but outside in the Les Jardins Musicaux (The Musical Gardens) we were free… Transported back in time we danced amongst the groves and sculptures as royal music filled the air not caring a hoot about the stares. Sugar couldn’t believe we were being so bold and the delight on both hers and Captains face made all the lines and crowds worth it. We ran amongst the green labyrinth stumbling upon secret corners and grand fountains. We picked flowers and spoke to statues and fell in love with this magical place.
When these things are said and done you wonder how much does your child really remember at the age of three, what impact does this really have on them? A couple of months after this adventure I heard Sugar talking to her friend Micky at the dinner table. I didn’t catch the start but I did hear this. “Marie Antoinette, yeah, do you know about her? She lives in France and is a real queen. She spent allllllllllllllll the money and everyone got really mad and then there was a war!!!!! Mum why did they chop off her head?”
